Hello

My name is, Greg Spitzer and I'm a sculptor working primarily in stone. Originally, I concentrated on the human form and my work ranged from figurative abstract to biomorphic in nature. For the past several years, I have been exploring abstraction using geometric forms, such as möbius strips and twisted torus shapes. A lot of my most recent works are viewable on Instagram.

Artist Statement

“I create my work using some of the most durable of materials - stone and metal."

"I use these enduring materials to create a connection with the viewer by evoking a sense of recognition and permanence.  Beauty, classic form, design, as well as a dedication to precision, are essential to achieving this goal."

"I control as many factors as possible before I begin sculpting, but as each work progresses, unpredictable elements may appear and are incorporated in context.  Often, these elements enhance my work in unexpected ways - the merging of nature with my designs creates my best work.”

My Story

I began experimenting with stone carving while living in Denver and working at The Purple Door Studios.

A resident of New England since 2008, I have been a member and former president of the New England Sculptors Association (NESA). In the past, I have been member of the Cambridge Art Association (CAA) and Associate Director of Andres Institute of Art (AIA).

I studied traditional carving techniques at the renowned Studio SEM in Pietrasanta, Italy and have attended the Marble/marble symposium in Colorado for several years. He learned casting techniques at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design.

I currently reside and work out of my home studio in Charlestown, RI.

My work has been represented by L’Attitude Gallery in Boston, MA., The Walsingham Gallery in Newbury Port, MA., The Powers Gallery in Acton MA., and most recently The Lily Pad Gallery in Watch Hill, RI.
